S’installer aux Etats-Unis, recevoir ou pas avoir l’autorisation de travailler, décider de ne pas travailler, choisir un travail à mi-temps, se reconvertir... celui qu’on appelle le "conjoint suiveur" va chercher à développer sa propre activité en expatriation. Cependant, un full-time job n’est pas toujours compatible avec la logistique de la vie de famille. Parfois, le visa de celui que l’administration appelle le "dependant" ne lui permet pas de travailler.

L’engagement associatif se présente alors comme une alternative remarquable. Moins valorisé en France qu’aux Etats-Unis, le bénévolat jouit ici d’une aura remarquable. Il fait partie de la culture américaine : "Giving Back".

Pendant cette conférence sur le bénévolat aux Etats-Unis, Maya Didier, étudiante française, et Kerstin Lutijen, infirmière et coach néerlandaise, présenteront les bénéfices professionnels de la vie associative. Rosemary Leblond, Directeur Exécutif de Fidesco USA, abordera la professionnalisation du monde associatif. Enfin, le Pr Colette Loll, de Georgetown University, évoquera la culture américaine autour de l’engagement associatif.

Organisée par WAA, cette conférence se tiendra dans la salle Tocqueville de l’Ambassade de France à Washington DC, le 16 mai de 10h a 12h. Gratuite et ouverte également aux non-membres de WAA, il est obligatoire de s’inscrire sur ce lien et de présenter un document d’identité à l’entrée de l’ambassade.

Moving to the United States, being allowed to work or not, choosing to stay at home, preferring a part-time job, or retraining... the "spouse-follower" may find it hard to find the right balance between a full-time job and the logistics of family life. Sometimes, the visa of the "dependant" doesn’t imply a working authorization.

Joining an association could be an alternative activity. "Giving back" is a value transmitted to children and promoted to the highest company managers. Volunteering in the United States is a cultural way of life and exploring this activity can provide a genuine American experience as a relevant line on your curriculum.

During this conference, Maya Didier, a student in Accountancy, and Kerstin Lutijen, a Dutch nurse and coach, will expose the benefits of joining an American association. Rosemary Leblond, Executive Director of Fidesco, will explain the professionalization of volunteering. Pr Colette Loll of Georgetown University will help us to understand the American point of view toward volunteering.

WAA will host you at the French Embassy, in Tocqueville conference room, on May 16th, from 10AM to 12PM. This free event is open to WAA non-members. Please register and show an ID at the French Embassy.
